Jack Bigelow doesn’t think the goal of networking is to get a job. Instead, the goal is to reach out to as many people as possible and develop relationships because everyone has a contact. “Getting a job is a by product of good networking,” says Bigelow, a former Principal at Arthur Andersen LLP and now a Communications Consultant. “One CRC member I worked with had been searching for more than a year and was really discouraged,” he says. After Bigelow sat face to face with the candidate and worked out a networking map, the candidate was rejuvenated. “He cut down the amount of time he was flinging out resumes into cyberspace. He started purposefully and intentionally networking by meeting people and getting them engaged in the possibilities of his career.”
One of the most inspiring parts of advising candidates, Bigelow says, is to see them recharged with power in their step when they leave CRC. “I think just walking out of the session with a plan is a confidence-building experience for candidatess,” says Bigelow.
